A series of bomb blasts on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka’s Colombo capital city killed over 129 people till midday. Several hundreds more were injured. The blasts were triggered off as the devotees were gathered in huge numbers at Churches for Easter celebrations. The blasts began at around 8.45 a.m. and they took place in over six locations within a short span of time. Children were found to be in larger numbers among the dead and injured.
Hundreds of injured persons were shifted to the Batticaloa area hospital. The condition of many injured was stated to be serious. The immediate reason for the blasts was no known. The Sri Lankan government called an emergency meeting and began quick response activities. Sri Lankan leaders expressed shock over the incident.
Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj expressed grief over the tragedy. She spoke to the Indian Embassy there. All arrangements were being made by Indian Embassy to extend help to Indians who were affected in today’s blasts. The Colombo hospitals reported shortage of blood to save the injured and gave out an appeal for help.
