Conventionally, when criticizing the government, the opposition party leaders tend to be witty. However, it is no longer limited to the opposition party alone, the ruling party leaders have been using more wit, humour, poetry and couplets than ever. The Telangana assembly sessions have witnessed quiet a mixture of lenience and humour.
After a discussion regarding “she teams”, the Gadwal Minister D.K. Aruna was speaking about 2 BHK. She was constantly interrupted by the ruling party. The minister cheerfully said that “SHE teams” are needed in the assembly to let the woman leaders speak without having to hear the comments from the peers.
Later in the session opposition leader Jana Reddy acknowledged the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for giving a meticulous reply on 2BHK scheme and his camp office. The minister teased that KCR had lunch before coming to the House to give reply and unfortunately Jana Reddy was not invited. The CM sprang a surprise and said he wants to have lunch at the opposition leader’s home. The luncheon has been customary earlier but since the by-elections happened he couldn’t make it. KCR further added he is looking forward for a simple lunch at Jana Reddy’s residence. The house was filled with laughter and one could find the opposition leader coy after this comment.
In the Legislative council session, TRS MLC Naradasu Lakshman Rao recollecting the Telangana movement struggle sang a song on Godavari. The ministers know how to keep themselves entertained.
At the national level though the parliamentary sessions were least productive, however, 2016 has been recorded as the most poetic year in the Lok Sabha’s history. The majority of the poems were read by the BJP ministers and the second place was taken by INC. Since 2014, instances of ‘Wit and Humour, Poetry and Couplet’ have risen each year significantly. An official legitimate account of all instances of poetry, use of couplets, and banter between Members of Parliament is maintained by the records team.
This is likely to be the result differing styles of speechmaking by individual leaders, the overall incidence of the use of Wit and Humour, Poetry and Couplet have been rising.
