Last Friday, Mani Ratnam’s romantic entertainer Cheliyaa released with a low buzz. Despite having a solo release and no competition at the box office, the film opened to a lukewarm response in both the Telugu states and in overseas. The slow narration and the week storyline impacted the collections in the first weekend.
In US, Cheliyaa opened its account with a moderate $ 27K on its Thursday premiers. But, on Friday and Saturday, the film registered pathetic numbers as it managed $ 21K and $ 22K respectively. There is hardly any improvement in collections on Sunday and trade pundits opine that the film will be a huge disaster in overseas circles.
However, the Tamil version is faring much better than the Telugu version. The Tamil version collected $ 66K from premiers and went on to notch up more than $ 100K each on Friday and Saturday.
Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari played the lead roles in the film which has its music score by AR Rahman.
