The TRS government in its election manifesto promised 12 per cent reservation for Muslims and Scheduled Tribes. After several discussions, the Telangana Government has decided to go ahead and increase BC-E reservation.
TS BC Commission headed by B S Ramulu submitted its report with recommendations to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, following which he held a cabinet meeting and later met the governor. The Assembly session will convene to adopt both the reservation and GST bills.
The recommended hike by BC and ST commissions is yet to be revealed.
Muslims currently have 4 percent reservation while the ST have 6percent. The overall percentage is at 50 percent as per the Supreme Court cap. Muslim quota may go up by 7to9 percent while the ST quota by 6 to 9 percent.
KCR aspires to give 12percent reservations to Muslims but due to legal constraints, he may want to pass the bills with the overall 60percent. To provide legal scrutiny and protect the legislation, the state government would request the centre to include the quota Bill in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution.
AIMIM requested the government to take legal approval to avoid rejection Muslims reservation. The arch rival BJP is opposing religion based reservation for which they even protested during the budget sessions.
