Ensuing the allegations against the Janmabhoomi Committees, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu decided to form new committees with leaders having clean image by August. With this decision, 12000 committees have been canceled in a go. The decision comes after the negative impact the committees have been creating for the ruling party among the people.
Politicians and experts have always been of the view that the Janmabhoomi committees formed by the government are against the Federal spirit. The decision to abolish the committees has received a good response so far. The committees as such were operating a parallel system in society. The presence of these committees was seen everywhere which includes issuing ration cards, pensions to elders and disabled people, lands and homes for poorest of poor.
TDP has worked tremendously to come to power in the last election. The CM has set up a the Janmabhoomi committees on large scale with a commitment to provide posts to the Karyakartas. The government has implemented welfare programs based on the recommendations of Janmabhoomi committee members. These committees started taking advantage of the situation and soon expressed authority over the local leaders who were elected in democratic way. They have been accused of collecting large amount of money from Officers and contractors. Even the local MLAs had nothing to do with the committee members and remained helpless.
Complaints started pouring in regarding the performance of the committees. There is criticism that the welfare schemes implemented by the government are not reaching the real beneficiaries because of the corruption in these committees. Three years into prestigiously setting up the committees their performance was all through dissatisfactory. Leader of opposition and YSRCP president YS Jagan also demanded the cancellation of Janmabhoomi committees. The government was also losing respect of people. The level of corruption and immoral activities went to an extent that, it started impacting the TDP president himself.
Chief Minister Chandrababu took special note on the functioning of the committees and reportedly got a comprehensive survey done. The survey revealed that the committees were not only performing faultily but also were flagging the level of trust on the government. Consequently, the TDP chief annulled 12000 committees. There is a debate in the TDP faction that there may be some discontent among activists for repealing all the committees in one go. However most of them termed this as a welcome move. Apart from abolishing the committees, people are also demanding the government to issue a comprehensive inquiry into the corruption these committees have done committed.
