Telugu Desam Leader Nasyam Mohammad Farooq has been named as the chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu made the announcement in this regard on Monday.
This appointment comes after, Chandrababu promised to give the Council chairmanship to a Muslim during the Nandyal by elections in a bid to woe the minority voters. The TDP government has been facing criticism for failing to induct a Muslim minister in the state cabinet.
The tenure of the previous chairman A Chakrapani expired in May. Farooq was sworn in as MLC in Governor’s quota in the last week of July. He hails from Nandyal and was the former deputy speaker of the Assembly in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.
