Shankar Shanmugam, one of the most celebrated filmmakers in South India, has completed 25 years in cinema. Widely popular as a pioneer of message oriented films, Shankar made his debut as director in 1993 with Arjun’s Gentleman. Immediately, he bagged a chance to direct Kamal Haasan in ‘Indian’ ( Bharateeyudu) which emerged as a blockbuster hit of 1996. From then, there is no looking back for this master storyteller who has a unique style of blending social values with commercial elements in his movies.
Till now, he directed 11 films and worked with top stars like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Vikram. He is also known for introducing latest technology in South cinema. His penchant for innovation was clearly evident in Rajinikanth’s Enthiran ( Robot) which released in 2010. The spectacular CG and VFX effects in this science fiction thriller have been lauded on international stage several times.
Shankar is now keenly awaiting the release of his highly anticipated tentpole film 2 Point 0 which is gearing up to hit the screens in November this year. The Rajinikanth – Akshay Kumar starrer is billed as costliest India film ever. Next year, he is planning another big budget social drama with Kamal Haasan and this is going to be the sequel to Indian.
