The internal demand in Congress party for entry of Priyanka Gandhi into active politics has been there for many years. But she has consciously avoided it till now. The party leaders and cadres have also lost all hopes on her entry except that she renders services as a star campaigner during elections. All of a sudden, Priyanka took a plunge that too in the most competitive Uttar Pradesh where the party is in a total mess.
Why this belated move from the Gandhis? Analysts say Rahul Gandhi is very upset over the way in which their party is ignored by the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party which formed an alliance. The smart move by Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati has hurt the Gandhis so much that they decided to take it as a family prestige matter to counter rivals. There is a new resolve among the Gandhis to reclaim their former strength and power.
The Modi-Shah power game has also upset Varun Gandhi who is also thinking of joining the Congress in order to strengthen the hands of his cousins. It is becoming more a prestige issue of the Gandhi family rather than the Congress party now. They are say Priyanka was not active till now as she was a mother of two children who have grown up now. There are reports the Gandhis are preparing to give their best shot to unseat Modi in coming election.
