Andhra Pradesh government finally declared Mahakavi Gurajada Venkata Apparao’s residence in Vijayanagaram as the protected monument. Gurajada (1862-1915), considered father of verancularization to Telugu textual language, lived in Vijayanagaram. Issuing orders the Andhra Pradesh government said the building, which is dilapidated condition, as structure of historical and archaeological importance and requires protection under Andhra Pradesh Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1960 (Act VII of 1960).
This verse, ‘desamante mattikadoi , desamante manusuloi’ written a century ago, has not lost its magic in the inspiring the people.
The government, in 2012, had sanctioned Rs.15 lakh for conversion of the heritage building into a museum during the cultural festival held in Vizianagaram on occasion of cultural festival. Nothing happened after this fixing up of a plaque mentioning that the building would be converted into a museum at a cost of Rs.15 lakh. According to sources, the then government needed steps under Andhra Pradesh Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1960 (Act VII of 1960) to protect the House as a monument. But no government had initiated the process. Finally, it became a reality today when the government issued orders as per the act.
