Galla Jayadev, TDP MP from Guntur, who will soon have the distinction of being first MP of capital region of Amaravati, has taken it upon himself the responsibility of promoting the upcoming capital in a big way.
He began his work with a demand for rail connectivity for the green field capital city of Andhra Pradesh. As per chief minister Naidu’s program, core capital, which houses the administrative structures of state government, will be ready by 2018. So, Jayadeva demanded centre to announce a new rail corridor connecting Amaravati with all district headquarters of Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states and ensure the plan was implemented by 2018.
He urged Prime Minister Modi and Railway minister Suresh Prabhu to incorporate Amaravati railway corridor in the 2016-17 Railway Budget itselt. He made this plea through Rule 377 in Lok Sabha. Explaining the importance of Amaravati, Jayadev said Amaravati capital city is located between Vijayawada and Guntur, which are very important commercial centres in Andhra Pradesh. AP Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA), set up to develop Amaravati into a global city, covers an area of 8352.69 Square Kilometers with a population of 5.9 million and has lot of potential for development.
“These two cities put together will provide the critical mass and eventually create demand for future development in the capital city region. Since, these three cities-Vijayawada, Guntur and Amaravati will be in close proximity, it will be critical to seamlessly integrate the new city with the existing ones,” he said and added that they need to be connected by rail.
Later, participating in the debate on National Waterways Bill, 2015, Jaidev said Inland waterways were the most inexpensive mode of transport for both people and cargo, and they should be promoted wherever they are feasible. He said Andhra Pradesh was an ideal state for the development of inland waterways.
Stating that Andhra Pradesh chief minister Naidu was fully committed to develop inland waterways, Jayadev said there was need to revive the the Puducherry-Kakinada Buckingham Canal built during British days. The Buckingham Canal, he said, could carry boats that transport cargo up to 1,000 tonnes. ” The state government has plans to develop the Andhra Pradesh into a multi-mode logistics hub aligning road, rail, airport and seaports along with the inland waterways. New capital Amaravati, which is being built on the b banks of river Krishna and the Buckingham Canal passes through the river Krishna near the Prakasam Barrage,” he said. He added that the new capital Andhra Pradesh had potential to evolve into world class city on the lines of Amsterdam and Venice.
