The Vijayawada Metro project has taken its first significant step towards becoming a reality. The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC) has recently submitted proposals to the NTR District Collector, outlining the need for 91 acres of land across Krishna and NTR districts. The initial phase will focus on constructing two corridors: one from Gannavaram to PNBS and another from Penamaluru to PNBS.
APMRC officials have prepared detailed proposals specifying the required land for the project. These were recently presented to NTR District Collector G. Lakshmi. The district administration is now reviewing the land acquisition process, and a coordination meeting between district collectors and metro officials is expected soon to move the proposals forward.
The first corridor will span 26 km, starting from PNBS and connecting Vijayawada Railway Station via Eluru Road. It will then join the national highway at Ramavarappadu and extend to Gannavaram. This route will link key areas, including Gannavaram, Yogasramam, the airport, Velpuru, Gudavalli, Chaitanya College, Nidamanuru, MBT Center, Prasadampadu, and Ramavarappadu Chowrasta.
The second corridor will cover 12.5 km, starting from PNBS and passing through Bandar Road, Benz Circle, Autonagar, Kanuru, and Poranki before reaching Penamaluru. This route will connect PNBS, Victoria Museum, Indira Gandhi Stadium, Benz Circle, Autonagar, Ashok Nagar, Krishnanagar, Kanuru Center, Tadigadapa, and Poranki.
While the Vijayawada Metro was initially planned with four corridors, the current focus is on the first two. A total of 34 stations are planned across these corridors. The land acquisition process, which was initiated during the previous government was stalled and has now been restarted.
Officials have identified 91 acres of land across Vijayawada and Krishna districts for the project. A coach depot, initially planned at Nidamanuru, will now be set up at Kesarpalli. The district administrations of both regions are collaborating to ensure a smooth land acquisition process.
