Andhra Pradesh Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Nara Lokesh announced that the Government would review the Private Universities Act, to facilitate entry and growth of new private universities in the state.
HRD Minister Nara Lokesh speaking in the Assembly on Monday explained about the need for reviewing Private Universities Act.
“There is a need to review and amend the Private Universities Act. Certain amendments made to AP Private Universities Act are against the guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC). We will discuss with all the stakeholders, Education Department officials and will soon take a decision in this regard,” said HRD Minister Nara Lokesh.
It was Chandrababu Naidu Govt, which introduced Private Universities Act in 2016, leading to sprouting of VIT, SRM, Korea, Centurion private universities in Andhra Pradesh.
After Chandrababu Naidu Govt gave way for YS Jaganmohan Reddy Govt, certain amendments were made to Private Universities Act, giving importance to brownfield universities instead of greenfield universities. As a result Mohan Babu University, Godavari Global University and others sprang up.
However the amendments made during YSRCP tenure are said to be barring setting up of new private universities. Present Government aims to review and make amendments to it, to ensure setting up of new private universities in Andhra Pradesh state.
