This small, new rural university of Telangana has become role model for the entire country suddenly. The Telangana University (TU) at Nizambad has become country’s first complete Wi-Fi campus. The university is offering free and unlimited Wi-Fi on the campus for the benefit of the students, who are mostly come from SC, ST and Backward Class communities. In fact, this character of the university prompted the authorities to make the campus Wi-Fi enabled for the benefit of the students. Now, Human Resources Department, government of India, wants to replicate the experiment in all universities across India.
TU was set up in 2006 with the objective of making higher education accessible to the students from backward regions of Telangana. In 2015 the university earned NAAC grade B. Located on the sprawling 577 acres campus, the TU has now attracted the national attention by becoming country’s first wi-fi campus. The university has become ” total Wi-Fi campus in 2015 with the support extended by IT minister Kalvakuntla Tarakaramarao and his sister Kavita, who is MP from Nizambad constituency. According to university registrar Prof Limbadri about 200 faculty members and 1800 students belonging to various department have got benefited by the unlimited free Wi-Fi facility installed on the campus.
A team of experts which visited the campus found to their surprise that they were on the wi-fi campus. A three- member panel led by HRD senior consultant Parameshwaran visited campus lauded the rural university’s modern ideas. They said TU was the first Indian rural university to provide free and unlimited Wi-Fi connectivity across the campus for the benefit of students and the staff.
“The MHRD will ask all other universities in the country to replicate TU initiative. This highly laudable initiative will be incorporated into the policy initiative of the Ministry,” Parameshwaran announced. Registrar Prof. R. Limbadri took the team around the university. The team observed the functioning and quality of the Wi-Fi and the hot spots installed for the purpose. The team interacted with the Wi-Fi coordinator Atheeq Sultan Ghori.
The team was thoroughly satisfied by the initiative and appreciated this as model for other universities in the country, said Prof Limbadri. Parameshwaran promised to recommend the case for the financial support from the HRD ministry, he said.
