Film theaters in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are in for a huge crisis this summer. And this crisis is on multiple levels.
One one hand is the huge power shortage expected this summer due to lack of adequate water reserves in most of India’s hydro projects. This is expected to cause a huge power supply problem and theaters in rural areas will be hit hard. Shows will have to be run on generators and unless there is a blockbuster playing, the revenues won’t work out.
The other issue is the general slowdown in both rural and urban economic activity. Severe drought conditions over the last two years have taken their toll and things are looking bad this summer. Because cinema is a source of entertainment for many, it is seen as an avoidable luxury during tough times.
Let us hope Tollywood delivers strong hits to keep people coming into theaters. Otherwise, it will be a double whammy for owners.
