Kakinada: Tension-like situation prevailed at Annarvaram in East Godavari district on Tuesday when CPI(M) State Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Madhu and former Loksabha MP G.V Harsha Kumar were arrested and shifted to Kakinada police station when they heading to attend a public meeting in Pampadipet and Kothapaka villages.
The public meeting was planned by the left parties – the CPI and the CPI(M) with the support of other political parties – the Congress and the YSRCP to oppose the land acquisition for a pharmaceutical firm being set up by Divis Laboratories in the villages. It is also learnt that several other leaders of the YSRCP and the Congress have been detained under house-arrest.
Heavy police personnel have been deployed in both the villages stating that there is no permission granted to hold the meeting. The massive meeting has been planned to bring out awareness among the people of the villages on ill-effects of the industry.
