Tollywood’s latest blockbuster Janatha Garage is inching towards the 75 Crore mark. After breaking several records in the first week, the NTR – Mohan Lal starrer is having a steady run in the second week and the collections have improved phenomenally towards the weekend in both the Telugu states. Trade circles declared the film as the biggest blockbuster of the year and it has touched the break even mark in most of the areas with in 10 days. In overseas, Janatha Garage has collected close to $ 1.7 Million by the end of Saturday.
However, the film might end as a loss venture for some of the overseas exhibitors. We have already reported that the overseas rights of Janatha Garage were bought for 7.2 Crore(USA 5.5 Crores, Rest of the world 1.7 Crores) by FICUS Entertainment. The distribution house released the film on their own in many areas as exhibitors backed out after they quoted very high prices. After a strong first weekend, the collections have slowed down in the second week and total added to $1.7 Million so far. The distributor is just breaking even as they own released in major areas for the above said reason.
But, in some areas, for which the movie was bought by local exhibitors at very high prices are going to loose 30%. For example, the Bay Area rights were sold for 175K. As of now, the gross in this region is 175k. So, the exhibitor is going to loose around 30%. Nevertheless, considering the commercial genre and the initial mixed reports, Janatha Garage performed on par with expectations in overseas. Had the overseas rights been bagged for a lesser price, the film would have been a profitable venture for all the parties involved.
