Kurien said that with the advice given by the Law and Justice Ministry, he has been considering the bill as a finance bill, so suspending ongoing discussion on the house on the bill. Stating terminating the bill from the proceedings of the house, he suggested the member that may be moved in the Lok Sabha.
When the discussion was taken up, the entire opposition moved behind the bill insisting voting on the bill, which would be an embarrassment. The house also witnessed serious debate on the bill for about two days in the last session. At a time when Dr Ramachandra Rao insisting for a vote on the bill, finance minister Arun Jaitly objected stating that it was a finance bill.
Then, the ball went to the court of the chair, who given verdict today. The Congress, which failed to win even a single state in Andhra Pradesh assembly elections, has started mobilising public support on the issue of special status to the state, as promised by BJP in its election manifesto. Party leaders have secured over one crore signatures in support of their demand, which was presented to President Pranab Mukherjee.
The heated debate in the Rajya Sabha has dismissed BJP’s claim that many other states are objecting to accord special status to AP, as all non-BJP parties supported the move. Categorically denying special status to AP, the finance minister Arun Jaitly recently announced a special package, which fails to convince the opposition and also people at large.
Sensing that special status would become a major issue of contention, Jana Sena chief and film star Pawan Kalyan, who had extended support to TDP and BJP in last elections, is now coming out organising massive public meetings in each district in support of the demand. The main opposition party YSR Congress Party also continuously mobilising public in support of this demand.
