At a time the Narendra Modi government is locked in the Parliament with the opposition stalling proceedings on the issue of demonetization and even some of its allies are also expressing reservations, the Telugu Desam party seems to be in hurry to take advantage of the situation. Union Minister of State Sujana Choudary is making hectic moves for the preparation of a bill according legal status to the special package announced by the finance minister Arun Jaitly last month for the state.
He is reportedly personally coordinating various ministries, who were asked to send proposals to the finance ministry for approval. Though there are apprehensions among BJP ministers in this regard, Choudary is hopeful in the present confusing environment the party may not prefer to antagonise one of its key allay. So, he is in hurry to get nod of the parliament for the bill during ongoing session only.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has realised that they failed to convince people the Special Package would be a suitable alternate for the Special Status that was promised during the enactment of Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act. By according legal status, he is hopeful they can pacify people to some extent.
BJP is fearing that according legal status to the special package ahead of assembly polls in five other states may leads to pressure for similar packages from those states. Moreover, the government seems to be not clear on the contents of the special package. It may be recalled that there were variations in the statements given by two union ministers – Arun Jaitly and Venkaiah Naidu in this regard.
