When the entire Tamil Nadu is shocked and people are in tense following Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said to be critical after she suffered a cardiac arrest in the hospital since last night, where she was admitted over two months ago, the central government is said to be worried over possible threats to law and order, if something unwarranted happens.
Already a heavy pose of policemen were deployed in front of the Apollo Hospitals and elsewhere in Chennai. Hundreds of party supporters were seen around the Apollo Hospitals as violence broke out when they tried to picket police barricades. Security has been tightened around offices of political parties including DMK in Chennai.
Union Home Ministry officials are in constant touch with the officials of Tamil Nadu Government and assessing the situation. Official sources says that law and order situation in Tamil Nadu was normal so far and adequate central forces were available in the State to assist the State administration.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh also spoke to Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and enquired about prevailing situation. Nine companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) of CRPF have been put on stand-by to be immediately airlifted from various places in the country to Tamil Nadu, if needed, senior CRPF officials said.
Both the center and state governments seems to be over cautious, in view of the past bitter experiences following the death of M G Ramachadnran in 1987.His death sparked off a frenzy of looting and rioting all over the state. Shops, cinemas, buses and other public and private property became the target of violence let loose.
The police had to resort issuing shoot-at-sight orders. Schools and colleges immediately announced the holidays till the situation came in control. The violence during the funeral alone left 29 people dead and 47 police personnel badly wounded. This state of affairs continued for almost a month across Tamil Nadu.
