Jayalalithaa Funeral
Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa was laid to rest at Marina beach in Chennai. Jayalalithaa was buried next to the memorial of Dr MGR, her mentor, off Marina beach. Her body was taken to the burial site in a glass casket, with lakhs of followers gathering along the route to pay their final respects. At the memorial site, her last rites were conducted by her close aide Sasikala Natarajan.
Thousands came out on the streets to pay their last respects and have a last glimpse of their leader popularly known as Amma. Jayalalithaa, who died of a massive cardiac arrest late last night.
Earlier in the day, her body was brought to her Poes Garden residence and then taken to Rajaji Hall where hundreds of thousands gathered to pay their tributes to the leader popularly known as ‘amma’ or mother. It was from Rajaji Hall that Jayalalithaa made her final journey — a two kilometres route — to Marina beach, where the last rites were be performed.
President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Jayalalithaa by offering flowers at Rajaji Hall in Chennai.
Jayalalithaa’s body has been transferred to the wooden coffin. Personnel from the three armed forces are conducting the final rites of the departed leader. She will be given a funeral with full state honours.Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao has paid his final tributes to Jayalalithaa. Her body will now be lowered into the ground following a gun salute.
The 68-year old AIADMK Chief passed away last night at Apollo Hospital. Following her demise, Ms Jayalalithaa’s body was taken to her Poes Garden residence before being taken to Rajaji Hall. Lakhs of people from all walks of life paid their last respects to the departed soul.
