The Tamil Nadu cabinet, in its first meeting held today after the demise of former chief minister Jayalalithaa has resolved recommending the center to confer the highest civilian award in the country Bharat Ratna to her.
Jaya’s mentor M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) was bestowed with the award posthumously in 1988 for his contribution in the field of both cinema and politics.
Newly appointed Chief Minister Panneerselvam presiding over the meeting moved this resolution. The cabinet also moved a resolution to request the Central government to install a bronze statue of their leader who was fondly known as ‘Amma’ inside the Parliament campus.
The state government decided to rename the MGR memorial to ‘Bharat Ratna Dr. MGR and Jayalalithaa’ memorial. It also decided to build a memorial for Jaya at a cost of Rs 15 crore.
Earlier, writing letters to President Pranab Murkherju and Prime Minister Narendra Modi India Makkal Kalvi Munnetra Kazhagam leader T Devanathan Yadav urged that the nation’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna should be given to J Jayalalithaa for her service to the uplift of women.
