For the past three weeks, the Opposition had been creating a ruckus in Parliament over demonetisation, but now they have completely scattered. After about one dozen parties have one by one quit their united stand and are now supporting the debate on demonetisation, the Congress and Left seems to be isolated. Only TMC is standing behind them.
That is why the Congress, TMC, and Left were forced to put their guns down. Out of compulsion agreed that work should be started in Parliament now. As a result, when the Parliament reassembles after extended weekend break, they are likely to facilitate for normal functioning of both the houses.
Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was the first to take his party out of this issue. Though Sharad Yadav is against demonetisation in the Rajya Sabha, in the Lok Sabha, both MPs of the JDU are against the Opposition’s stand.
After Nitish, the BJD excused itself. Its leader, Bhartruhari Mahtab, has given consent for debate under Rule 193. After that, the TRS also started singing its own tune. The party is ready for a debate under any rule, and the Speaker started the debate with TRS MP Jitendra Reddy.
The AIADMK was supporting the Opposition on demonetisation, but its MPs are not going to turn up in the house due to their leader Jayalalithaa’s tragic death. On Monday, there was not even a single MP of the AIADMK in the House. So, only the Congress, TMC, and Left are opposing demonetisation now. When around a dozen parties are ready for debate on the issue, these three parties have no way but to change their stand.
