Sankranthi 2017 is going to witness one of the biggest box office clashes in recent times. Star heroes Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna will be vying at the box office with their upcoming films Khaidi No 150 and Gauthamiputra Satakarni. While the craze for these big ticket films is quite high among the buyers of Telugu states, the response from overseas exhibitors is disappointing.
Detailed story
For Khaidi No 150, the producer initially quoted 13.5 Crores for overseas rights. Classics Entertainments came forward to snap the rights, but backed out from the deal due to the lukewarm response for the film among the local buyers. Later, a renowned producer was in discussions to acquire rights. But, he too felt that the price is too high. Finally, Classics Entertainments is releasing the film and the deal was sealed for 10 Crores. The film should gross around $ 2M mark for break even. Trade analysts opine that the local buyers are not showing much interest even though it is a Chiranjeevi film.
On the other side, Balakrishna’s Gauthamiputra Satakarni is also finding it difficult to get local buyers. The film was bought for 4 Crores and the break even mark is between $ 900K – $ 1M. As Balakrishna has very less market in overseas, buyers are not willing to take the risk. They are not sure if the film can perform well in overseas despite getting good talk and reviews.
It is going to be a herculean task for both these big ticket films to touch break even mark in overseas. Also, the bad weather in US is another concern. We wish these two films perform well in overseas , overcoming pre release lull
