A case was booked in Gachibowli police station of Cyberabad against union minister of labor Bandaru Dattatreya and Hyderabad central university vice chancellor apparao. Following the suicide of a dalit research scholar, Vemula Rohit, the students of the university lodged complaint with the police against the union minister, the VC along with two leaders of ABVP. the police said cases booked against the accused under IPC 306.
According to complaint, the accused were responsible for the suicide of the bright student. In fact for quite some time the students have been agitating against Dattatreya’s interference in the university affairs. Some time back, the students said Dattatreya reportedly wrote a letter to union HRD Minister Smriti Irani about the so called proliferation of anti-social elements in the campus. In turn, the union HRD minister asked the Vice Chancellor Apparao to take action against the students responsible for the disturbance in the campus. Later five student, including Rohit, were suspended. The suicide took place while the students were agitating for revocation of suspension against these students.
According to Cyberabad Police Commissioner CV Anand, the situation is now under control on the campus. Mild tension prevailed on the campus after scores of students gathered and held demonstration along with Rohit’s body and raised slogans last night. The students demanded police register a case under SC/ST Atrocity Act against Union minister and BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya while alleging that he had written to the HRD ministry seeking action against these research scholars. “The body has been sent for post-mortem. Though no untoward incident has been reported on the campus, we see some tension-like situation here,” a police official said. This morning students lodges a complaint, he said.
But case was booked under IPC 306, which deals with abetment of suicide.
Section 306-Abetment of suicide.—If any person commits suicide, whoever abets the commission of such suicide, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.
