As there is a sizeable population of Telugu people in and around Chennai, our films are performing very well there. This is the reason why Tollywood filmmakers are quoting solid prices for the theatrical rights of Telugu films for Chennai region. Recent films like Baahubali, Bharat Ane Nenu, Geetha Govindham stormed the Chennai box office.
The makers of Varun Tej’s latest outing Anthariksham quoted 45 lakhs for the Telugu rights in Chennai region. But, no distributor came forward to release the film. So, the producers decided to release the film on their own in Chennai. The film opened to poor response there and the first day collections are very dismal. As per trade analysts, Anthariksham might end as a disaster in Chennai and producers might not even recover the release and other expenses on the film. The gamble proved to be very costly for the producers.
The space thriller garnered below par reviews from audience and critics in Telugu states. Though the director came up with a novel genre, he couldn’t keep the audience hooked with his narration.
