Andhra Pradesh Congress lodged a complaint with President Pranab Mukherjee, who is in Hyderabad for Southern sojourn, against the way the construction of new Capital Amaravati was going on. The ruling TDP, the party alleged, was violating the country’s sovereignty in awarding contracts to some dubious companies from Singapore to construct the capital city.
Led by APCC president N Raghuvira Reddy, a delegation of Andhra Pradesh Congress seniors headed called on President Pranab Mukherjee and submitted a memorandum on various issues including the state government’s plan to award the construction works of Amaravati to Singapore agencies, bauxite mining and special status to AP. They also opposed the private universities bill which was cleared by the just concluded Assembly session.
The Congress delegation urged the President to prevail upon the State not take up bauxite mining in Visakhapatnam agency area which they said would serious hurt the environment. They also urged the president to direct the Governor not to give his consent to the controversial Private Universities Bill.
“AP government is not maintaining transparency and decisions with regard to construction of new capital city are being taken unilaterally, ignoring even suggestions of the Green Tribunal,” they told the President.
They further complained to the President that the State government is entering into ‘secret agreements’ with some of the Singapore companies to construct new capital city, by flouting all norms.
“The State government is keeping all GOs regarding the construction of new capital out of bounds for the public, stating them as confidential orders. Apart from this, the State government passed a bill that permits the government to lease out lands across the State to private parties for 99 years. which is detrimental to the interests of the State,” the Congress leader said, and urged the president to intervene in the matter.
