TDP MLA from Telangana and National BC Welfare Association President R Krishanaiah urged his own party’s government in Andhra Pradesh against going ahead on providing BC caste status to Kapus.
He said politically motivated decision on reservations would not stand the scrutiny of the Court of Law. “If Kapus are given BC reservation today, tomorrow Reddys and other advanced communities also demand the same thing,” he said adding that the move of AP government was politically motivated.
The Association organized Chalo Parliament on Monday and a sit-in at Jantar Mantar demanding 50 % reservations for OBC in the legislative bodies. He urged Andhra Pradesh government and other state governments across India not to entertain demand for BC status by any upper caste community which he said was meant to grab the benefits of reservations. He said reservation were not about poverty, they were much more than addressing the question poverty of some communities. ” Reservations for BC communities are targeted against the social and cultural backwardness of these communities which suffered for ages. So, according BC status to Kapus for political reasons will meet with serious resistance from backward castes proper,” he warned. He, however, welcomed Andhra Pradesh government’s decision to spend Rs 100 crore on the welfare of the Kapus.
“There do exist poor families among the Kapus. The move to spend Rs 100 crore is welcome. We demand Rs 200 crore for their welfare. poverty and social backwardness are two different things and should not be equated. Poverty alleviation programs can not address the social backwardness. Kapus are socially advanced community. They are not qualified for reservation under BCs,” he said.
Without verifying their social backwardness and without conducting any scientific survey how does the government want to include Kapus in the list of BCs, he asked. “It is old demand. Since the move to extend the BC reservations to Kapus was politically motivated, it was struck down by the High Court earlier. The Andhra Pradesh government should not forget it. If the government decides to go ahead on this BCs do not hesitate to wage a fight against the government,” he warned.
Talking about his dharna with ‘telugu360.com’ from New Delhi, Krishnaiah said,” We have been fighting for 50 per cent seats in all legislative bodies to be reserved for OBC. We have met BC leaders from all parties. Similarly we demand reservations in university governing bodies and other appointments made by the government to public sector governing bodies.”
