A delegation of MPs from Britain have passed serious comments on the construction of 597-ft-high Sardar Patel statue in Gujarat as the world’s tallest one. The MPs felt that India was making useless expenditure on such things and there would be no need for Britain to extend financial assistance any more. In the last five years, Britain provided funds of Rs. 9,429 crore to India for protection of women’s rights, renewable energy development, promotion of religious tolerance and so on.
Britain’s Conservative Party MP Peter Bone took strong objection to the erection of the Rs. 2,989-crore ‘Statue of Unity’ at such a huge cost. He called it a wasteful project and commented that Britain would not be required to provide funds to a country that was making so much useless expenditure on statues.
Peter Bone also said that the Central government was misleading the Indian people on the necessity of such unwanted projects like Statue of Unity. Other Britain MPs echoed the sentiments of Bone.
The Patel statue is considered a prestigious project for the Modi government, which has begun the project prior to 2014 general election and completed the same amid fanfare now just a few months ahead of 2019 elections.
