The affidavit submitted by the Central government to the Supreme Court on the implementation of the AP Reorganisation Act 2014 benefiting both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States, is an old document and there is nothing new in it for the two States to raise their voice against it. The special category status for Andhra Pradesh is not feasible as the Centre claims and the steel plants for Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh and Bayyaram in Telangana too is not feasible as per the affidavit.
The Centre had made it clear to the two Telugu States in 2015 itself about the steel plant in the Telugu States. This might be reviewed again if the States come forward offering better amenities and infrastructure for the establishment of the two plants. The AP government had already given its consent to give enough iron ore reserves and this might be considered at a later stage.
However, the Central government is not ready to give the special category status to Andhra Pradesh and it is committed to implement special package that it had offered in 2016. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on September 8, 2016 gave a statement late in the night after consultations with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. This statement was welcomed by Chandrababu Naidu who later felicitated Arun Jaitley claiming that the package had greater benefits to the State than the special category status.
The State Assembly too passed a resolution on September 9, 2016 thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Central government for offering greater benefits to the State in the form of special package.
However, the Chief Minister and his TDP leaders are now finding fault with the Central government for the affidavit given to the Supreme Court. They are blaming the Centre for denying special category status, which they gave up two years ago. People of the State are aware of these developments and it is to be seen if they buy the lies of the State government on special category status.
