Rajya Sabha MPs have a term of 6 years (unlike Lok Sabha MPs who have 5 years). Also, Rajya Sabha is permanent institute unlike Lok Sabha which dissolved every 5 years. Each Rajyasabha MP has 6 years term and only 1/3 of members retire every 2 years. In April 2018, tenure of 59 MPs in Rajya Sabha will be over. So how many of them will get re-nomination from the party and how many of them will not.
Among these 59 members to retire in April are, 8 Union Ministers and as all these 8 ministers are expected to get re-nomination. Union ministers like Jaitley, JP Nadda, Ravi Shankar Prasad ‘s tenure also will be over by this April.
Out of these 59, 17 MPs are from BJP and 12 from Congress. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actress Rekha are also among those whose term will be over by 2018.
From Telugu states, below are the MPs to get retired in 2018:
- Dr K. Chiranjeevi
- Smt. Renuka Chowdhury
- T.Devender Goud
- C.M. Ramesh
- Rapolu Ananda Bhaskar
So out of all these MPs, most of the 17 MPs from BJP, TDP MP like CM Ramesh are expected to get re-elected. There is no clarity yet on Devender Goud. But Congress has tough time renominating their MPs as they don’t have sufficient strength of MLAs. Chiranjeevi, Renuka Chowdary and Anand Bhaskar may not get renomination. Sachin and Rekha, who were nominated and elected during congress tenure also doubtful to get re-eelction. Also there are complaints on these two MPs that they have the least attendance in Parliament. Chiranjeevi, who is already inactive in politics, if do not get re-election, may completely retire from politics and focus on movies though he may continue in Congress party.
