This is the big month for both BJP and Congress. Election results in Gujarat would be seen as signals for 2019 outcome and so the entire country is observing this Gujarat elections. While initial opinion polls suggested it would be a smooth victory for BJP, but as the elections approach, opinion polls hinting at a neck to neck fight between the major parties. Gujarat has 182 assembly seats and 92 is the magic number. BJP won 115 seats in the 2012 assembly polls while Congress won 61.
The latest Lokniti-CSDS poll predicted that both parties would get 43% of the votes. BJP could win between 91 and 99 seats in the 182-member assembly.
Congress would have to settle for between 78 and 86 seats. The results of the poll were surprising as, during the surveys done in the month of August BJP was expected to cross 150 out of 182.
As per the surveying agency, reasons for this turn around is demonetization impacts, GST and farmers resent. Also, BJP is dominant in urban areas and Congress comfortably ahead in the villages, suggested the poll.
