Eyeing on substantial vote bank among Muslims, the Congress party in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is moving cautiously to corner Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on the question of providing reservations to Muslims. It may be recalled that KCR had promised to give 12% Muslim reservation within four months after coming to power. However, even after 30 months in power, the Chief Minister is allegedly playing mind games on 12% Muslim reservation.
Last year, KCR constituted a committee headed by retired IAS officer G Sudhir, which submitted its report to the Chief Minister on August 12 itself, which was put by him simply in public domain on December 10, keeping silent on the contents of the report. GHCC Congress Minorities Department Chairman Shaik Abdullah Sohail has demanded the government to clarify whether or not it accepted the Report. He wonders why chief minister was silent on the report for the last four months. The committee made 11 major recommendations and the State Government needs to clarify whether or not it accepted those recommendations.
Congress leaders have been accusing that the TRS Government was trying to mislead and confuse the common Muslims on its promise of giving 12% reservation in jobs and education. Sohali says that the Chief Minister was well aware that increase in Muslim quota from present 4% to 12% is not possible without the recommendation of a Backward Classes Commission.
However, instead of constituting a BC Commission, it formed a Commission of Inquiry which had no legal sanctity. Since Sudhir Commission too recommended increase in quota to 12% or a minimum of 9%, Congress alleges that the State Government is now trying to divert the attention of Muslim community by holding public hearings of BC Commission on Muslim reservation.
