The Congress had finally taken a call on the next chief minister of Telangana state, where elections were completed on December 3. The Congress had won the majority seats in the 119-member Assembly and was set to form the next government.
Incumbent chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao of the BRS had already resigned to the post and Governor Tamilasai Soundarajan is currently heading the administration in the state.
The Congress newly elected MLAs met in Hyderabad on December 4 and passed a resolution authorising the AICC president Mallikharjuna Kharge to announce the name of the Congress Legislature Party leader as the chief minister candidate.
However, things didn’t go well in the meeting. Party senior leaders like Uttam Kumar Reddy, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Damodara Rajanarasimha, Komatireddy Venkata Reddy have raised the objection to the candidature of Revanth Reddy. Interestingly, these leaders have also staked their claim for the post.
Bhatti Vikramarka wanted the party leadership to give him the chance to be the chief minister of the state given his seniority and loyalty to the party. He also told the leadership that as CLP leader between 2018 and 2023 he kept the Congress party alive in the Assembly and the state as well.
He also told the Congress top leadership that he held a padayatra in the state which took the party to the people and asserted that he would be the right choice to be the chief minister of the state.
With this, the issue went to Delhi, where the top leaders of the party met and discussed for two days. AICC president Mallikharjuna Kharge, former president Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders of the party were engaged in a brainstorming session in Delhi.
Finally, after two days, the Congress leadership announced the name of Revanth Reddy as the new chief minister of Telangana. He will be taking his oath at Raj Bhavan on December 7 at 10.28 in the morning.
