Suriya is currently facing a very unique difficulty that perhaps has no parallel in contemporary Indian cinema. Normally, actors are strongest in their home territories. Any outside territories are considered bonus revenues.
But for Suriya, the telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have become bigger markets than his home state of Tamil Nadu. The actor has constantly been building his market in Telugu since many years and it has now become very strong here.
For his recent release 24, the opening revenues in Telugu were significantly higher than the Tamil openings. Even the stellar US Box Office numbers are largely being fueled by the Telugu version of the movie.
Some sections of the Tamil media have been criticising Suriya, stating that his interest in the Telugu markets is far greater than his native Tamil market. This latest Box Office performance gap between Telugu and Tamil versions may further increase that criticism.
