With Aamir Khan’s wrestling drama ‘Dangal’ shattering box office records in China, total gross from China box office so far is Rs 1106.25 crore, movie lovers are of the opinion that producers have hit a goldmine. Well, the film of course is a surprising money spinner in China but the profits are not much as what everyone think.
A noted distributor-cum-exhibitor has divulged that the Chinese government gives only 25 per cent of the box-office revenue to producers of foreign films. In comparison, on an average, makers of foreign films can earn a share of 50 per cent in the US and 40 per cent in other countries, of the total revenue.
In that case, UTV Disney, the studio that bankrolled ‘Dangal’ will get only Rs 276 crore approx. from China. Of this amount, Aamir gets about 80 percent share according to his deal with the studio.
In order to restrict the onslaught of Hollywood films, the Chinese govt. allows only 45 foreign films to be be released in their country. Of the 45, four Indian films are permitted to be screened in Chinese theatres.
