The Election Commission of India has finally given its verdict on the Congress complaint over PM Modi’s alleged attempt to provoke communal feelings with his election speeches. The EC clarified that there’s nothing amiss with Modi’s speech and that it is not in violation of the election code. On its part, Congress expressed surprise and asked if Modi could give a call to Hindu voters not to vote for as Rahul Gandhi preferred a Muslim-dominated Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala.
Congress spokesman Ranadeep Surjewala took strong objection and accused the Election Commission of implementing the ‘Modi Code of Conduct’ but not the Election Code. How can the EC officials apply different rules for the BJP? Modi had violated Article 326 and the Election Code by trying to get electoral advantage by creating a communal divide. Surjewala’s comments come amid continuing complaints from the non-BJP parties over the alleged bias of the election machinery in favour of the ruling party at the Centre. The Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the Telugu Desam Party in AP are virtually waging a war against the Election Commission.
