Fashion Designer review rating

“Fashion designer” is the story of a ladies tailor whose life revolves around three women named Rani (Manasa), Ammulu (Manali Rathod) and Maharani (Anisha Ambrose). Established as a sequel to 1986’s cult film “Ladies Tailor”, “Fashion Designer” gets natural extension of characters from the original, Gopalam (Sumanth Ashwin) is S/o Sundaram and Pandu is S/o ‘Battala Satthi’. Along with these two, Krishna Bhagavan stays in the same house in a village in Godavari district.
One day Gopalam visits a palm-reader in nearby town, comes to know that he has Manmadha-Rekha in his hand. Those who has this Rekha has a knack of attracting women with ease. Inspired by the given theory, Gopalam plans to woo a rich girl from his village and begins flirting with multiple girls. In that process, he bumps into Gedhala Rani (a local girl), Ammulu (a goonda’s niece) and Maharani (an NRI).
The rest of the story revolves around how Gopalam deals with each lady with his smartness and deceit.
Performances:
First and foremost, Gopalam characterization demands someone with natural wit in his body language and good voice to suite Godavari dialect. Sadly, Sumanth Ashwin scores low in both these aspects. Even though he looked cool and tried his best to play the role given to him, his voice is terrible in Godavari accent.
Secondly, except Krishna Bhagawan, all character artistes are unknown faces. Thirdly, none of the three heroines has the village belle oomph that a typical Vamsy’s heroines possesses. Thus, casting resulted as a major disappointment.
It was the irreplaceable Rajendra prasad and Mallikharjuna Rao duo that made the original ‘Ladies Tailor’ a classic.
Analysis:
A filmmaker should remember that when you are attempting a sequel, the obvious comparison will be with the original and expectations will be very high, which in turn proves counterproductive to the sequel.
Ram Gopal Varma’s AAG (to Sholay ), Sardar Gabbar Singh (to Gabbar Singh), Nagavally (to Chandramukhi) etc. are a few examples of many sequels that had bitten dust. Now, Fashion designer has easily made it to that infamous list.
Starting with the premise, the ambience of the village, the tailor’s house etc. director Vamsy has tried to replicate the original as much as he could but he partially succeeded. Sadly, the same can’t be said about the content. The core point of this sequel, Manmadha Rekha, is not strong enough to generate humor or black humor situations as “Macha” generated in the original.
Producer Madhura Sreedhar has spent adequately but the result would have desired if script and casting were better.
Technicalities:
Director Vamsy should graciously retire rather than delivering such poor outputs.
Manisharma’s music is good and songs are of Vamsy mark to listen. However, on screen, only two songs are able to reflect Vamsy’s aura in song making. Background score in couple of scenes, with female voice, is of porn filmish which the makers should have avoided.
Final Verdict:
For the fans of ‘Ladies Tailor’, ‘Fashion Designer’ is a big disappointment. For those who aren’t, it is a lame attempt.
