Usually, the norm that female leads would flourish with just glamour goes around in film circles. While the heroes have to strive hard to look good, act good , fight and even dance good, it looks like the female leads have lesser say and if they have good looks- the job is 90% done. Thanks to today’s cosmetic revolution and color correction filters, even good looks is easier to get by (That’s another story altogether!).
We have witnessed actresses being embodiment of grace and performance in the black and white era but the childlike personality, chirpiness, and an amazing balance between stunning looks and performance was an unattainable dream. But one petite actress named Sridevi turned the tables in the 70s decade by not just achieving all this, and also surpassing it.
Her presence in Padaharella Vayasu song- Sirimalle Poova needs no explanation. While most of her contemporaries were laden in makeup, artificial appearances and flashy dresses, Sridevi looked like an angel in white half saree- becoming a role model for young women and heartthrob for men! The natural beauty she showcased in the film was a replica of rustic women of South Indian villages! Though Sridevi edged to umpteen glamorous roles later, there was an inevitable grace and poise associated with her which no other female lead (till date) could get to.
While Sridevi is best remembered for her obvious stunning looks, her inner talent was always sidelined. She was tremendously good in comedy timing (Kshana Kshanam is the best example!) and danced like a dream. It was a rare occasion to see a heroine display glamour so effortlessly and also be extremely comfortable in it- Sridevi did both these with perfection!
Sridevi is considered to have won more hearts with lesser skin show which proves time and again that- beauty is a personality, not just a bunch of good looks! Personality evolves with time and grows with experiences- Sridevi is a perfect example of it. She was a thorough professional when it came to acting, but also had a charming personality which kept her smile intact and express poise.
No matter how many beautiful actresses come and grace the world of Telugu Cinema, the mark made by Sridevi will be timeless and eternal. She has inspired generations of women who appreciate the childlike nature in them and evolve completely as a personality!
Sridevi also had that inner plea where she deserved to look beyond that charming smile and good looks. So, whenever you watch a Sridevi movie now as a tribute- watch her personality and attitude- and fall in love with her once again!
Telugu360 deeply regrets the loss of Sridevi and wishes her family lot of strength and support.
