Key installation work on the turbines has begun at the Polavaram hydropower center. The critical “stay rings” that support the turbines are now being put in place.
A 320-metric ton crawler crane is being used to install these massive stay rings. Each stay ring is divided into 4 sections and weighs 136 metric tons.
The stay rings play a vital role in ensuring the efficient operation of the Kaplan turbines that generate electricity at the project. With the stay ring installation underway, other critical construction work at the project site can now progress.
“The turbine installation can only happen after the stay rings are in place,” explained SE Rambhadra Raju of AP Genco, who attended the pooja ceremony marking the start of the stay ring work.
MEIL Chief Operating Officer Satish Babu Angara said, “All the project works are being done in parallel to avoid any delays and meet the target completion time.”
The Polavaram hydropower center is a key infrastructure project that will boost electricity generation in the state of Andhra Pradesh once completed.
