‘No work, no pay’ is a popular ethic in job culture these days. This is not applicable to our legislators and parliamentarians. Whether they attend the Assembly or not, they will get their salaries which are always on the higher side. The issue got highlighted to a larger degree because of the continued absence of Opposition YCP MLAs from the AP Assembly during the last five years. Even on the last day of the term, the opposition did not bother to make their presence felt.
This is what TDP chief and CM Chandrababu Naidu has commented on. He has said Jagan and his MLAs have no right to take salaries since they have not attended the Assembly sessions for a long time. Then the question arose why the Speaker or the Government continues to give salaries in such instances. If a small employee fails to show up for a single day, he has to give lot of explanation which sometimes leads to loss of pay also.
It is a matter of work ethic which is a rare commodity in the country’s political fraternity. The MLAs may argue they are preoccupied with their activities in their assembly segments. But ultimately they have to respect the legislative assembly and its rules. This is where they have to debate what is good and how to do maximum service to the people who elected them.
