From Trivandrum to New York, Malayalees are going gaga over a new peppy song ‘Jimikki Kammal’ from the Mohanlal starrer Velipadinte Pusthakam. It has become an anthem for Onam this year with everyone shaking their leg to the tune.
#JimikkiKammalChallenge was a promotional stint by the film producers. They asked the viewers to choreograph their own dance moves and upload it on social media. Even the makers did not expect such tremendous response.
Within days, all the social media platforms were filled with the videos of Malayalees dancing to this catchy number. People across the world including lungi clads in New York and UAE took up this challenge.
One specific video of Dance by Students and Staff of Indian School of Commerce dressed in traditional attire has received over 6million views on Youtube. A Twitter user shared this video with American talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who replied saying that he loved the song.
Jimikki Kammal which translates to ‘My mother’s earring’ is originally a popular folk song about a couple’s fight over an earring. Only the two lines were taken and was modified as a college song for the movie, sung by Vineeth Sreenivasan and Renjith Unni.
The track success can be attributed to the lyrics as it takes some ingenious digs at moral policing.
