Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today assured the Assembly that he would personally take up the matter of student unrest on the campus and the demand for the recall of vice chancellor of Hyderabad Central University with Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon.
Responding to the debate on the unrest on the campus in the House Saturday, the CM said since the authority to recall the vice-chancellor Prof Apparao Podile is not in his hands, he said, he would discuss all the issues related to the HCU with the Prime Minister. During the debate members from Congress and MIM basically raised two issues, removal vice-chancellor Apparao, who they said was responsible for Rohit’s suicide, and police excesses on the campus. KCR said he took note of the demand for the recall of vice-chancellor by the members, but he was helpless in the matter as the institute was a central university. ” As the leader of the House and as the head of the government, I will discuss the matter with the Prime Minister and work towards finding a solution to the unrest on the campus,” he assured. He agreed with view of the members that Universities should be free from all sorts of discrimination.
As for police excesses, the CM said he would institute an inquiry by a senior officer to look into if there had been any over-enthusiasm by the police officials at the time of preventing the students from vandalizing the VC bungalow. ” I personally spoke to the DGP and other senior officials to instruct that JNUSU president Kanhiay Kumar be allowed to enter the campus. I instructed them not to arrest him . The police did not arrest Kanhiay Kumar as per his order but he was stopped by the security personnel of the University. He was not arrested when he addressed a meeting at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram. Still, I will have the charge of excesses by the police inquired,” he said.
Earlier, members Bhatti Vikramarakha (Congress), Akbaruddin (MIM) etc brought the police ‘brutality’ to the notice of the House. Bhatti said a professor, who was the director of Ambedkar Study Circle was mercilessly slapped by a police official.
