Manohar Parrikar, 61 is all set to take oath as the next Chief Minister of Goa tomorrow. President Pranab Mukherjee accepted his resignation as Defence Minister with immediate effect.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was given back his portfolio of the country’s Defence Minister. Jaitley had started his stint in the Modi Government as finance minister and defence minister. The procurement processes which was halted during the UPA tenure needed attention, so Modi picked Parrikar as defence minister who eventually had to give up the CM post in Goa.
Parrikar was succeed by Pareskar as CM in Goa who failed to match the former. Goa delivered a fractured mandate with BJP (13), INC (17), others (10) and AAP (0). Congress needed just 4 seats to form government but like always they failed to convince.
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) BJP’s former ally, offered support to the BJP on pretext that Parrikar heads the government. Nitin Gadkari was roped in to get the support of “others” so that BJP can form the government. Gadkari had discussions with MGP who won three seats, Goa Front party who won three seats, three independents and one NCP. Their proposals were accepted, thus BJP got support from ten leaders within two days. Governor Mridula Sinha accepted Parrikar’s claim and invited him to form the new government.
