Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States will receive moderate to heavy rains in the next two days, predicted the Met department. Heavy rains lashed parts of Godavari delta, Krishna, Kurnool and Guntur districts on Wednesday and Thursday. With the heavy rains on Thursday morning, Rajahmundry railway station road, Kotipallu bus stand centre, several low-lying areas in Tummalova, Innispeta were submerged.
Following heavy inflows due to rains, ten gates of Pulichintala project were lifted before evacuating the submergence villagers to safety places. Ten gates of Prakasam barrage were also lifted due to inflows from the upstream when the water-level reached 12 ft full-level mark on Thursday. So far, 7,000 cusecs of water was released downstream. Since another 3 lakh cusecs of water is expected into Prakasam barrage, the irrigation officials said that there is a chance of lifting 70 gates.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu convened a review meeting on the rescue efforts taken up in rain-affected districts. The AP CM directed the District Collectors and revenue officials to ensure that affected people are shifted to safety.
Giving no respite to Hyderabadis, rains continue to lash on Thursday afternoon bringing life to standstill. Several low-lying areas were inundated again due to rains. Residents in Bhandari layout near Nizampet, several colonies in Pragathi Nagar, Kukatpally and Miyapur are having a harrowing time with the rain water coming entering their houses.
Punjagutta, Banjara Hills, Nampally, Madhapur, Mehidipatnam Secunderabad, AS Rao Nagar, ECIL, Cherlapally, Nacharam, Tarnaka, Uppal, Dilsuknagar, received moderate to heavy rains resulting in traffic jams. Several localities were inundated and people witnessed water-logging up to knee-level. Charminar and other localities in the old city witnessed incessant drizzles.
