Myanmar’s second-largest city Mandalay experienced another earthquake on Sunday afternoon, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. This follows Friday’s devastating 7.7 magnitude quake that left the city in ruins.
Already sleepless from the first earthquake, residents now face repeated aftershocks. Major buildings and infrastructure have suffered extensive damage. The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake centers were just 10 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.
Authorities have confirmed over 1,644 deaths so far, but estimates suggest the final count could cross 10,000. The situation on Mandalay’s streets is becoming unbearable as decomposing bodies create a foul smell throughout the city.
In scorching temperatures, people are desperately removing debris with bare hands and small tools, hoping to find survivors. With each passing hour, chances of finding people alive diminish significantly.
Rescue operations face severe obstacles due to destroyed roads, collapsed bridges, limited communication systems, and ongoing civil conflict in the region.
