Amid the continued agitation by the students of Hyderabad Central University for removal of Dattatreya from union council of ministers and Apparao as Vice Chancellor, CPM general secretary Yechuri Sitaram visited the campus and interacted with the agitators. Since yesterday many political parties have been deputing their representatives from New Delhi to inquire into the suicide of the dalit research scholar Rohit Vemula.
Addressing the students Yechuri said the tension was being built up in country because of the attitude of the NDA government towards educational institutes. He said there had been an attempt to mold the consciousness of the student to conform to the Hindutva. The freedom to articulate view freely was being denied and this goes against the very grain of the spirit of Constitution of India. The CPM general secretary said it was “not the case of simple abetment of suicide, it’s straight forward murder.” He demanded the removal of vice chancellor immediately and sought action against Bandaru Dattatreya, union labor minister. In another development, YSR Congress Party chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also visited the HCU campus on Wednesday and expressed solidarity with the student community. YS Jagan strongly condemned the interference of BJP’s Central ministers into campus affairs which led to the death of Dalit scholar Rohith.
YS Jagan also had a talk with student leaders and inquired details about the incidents that led to the present unrest. After a detailed discussion with the scholars who launched an indefinite hunger strike demanding revocation of suspension on four other Dalit scholars, YS Jagan assured them all support from the party.
YS Jagan also visited Rohith’s family in Uppal and consoled his mother Radhika on Tuesday.
In Hyderabd, members of AISF staged a dharna in front of the house of union labor minister Bandaru Dattatreya.
