Solid content often plays a crucial role in deciding the box office prospects of any film. But, some times factors like weak competition from other releases, festival season and long weekends can provide a much needed impetus to films with average or poor content. This is the reason most of our filmmakers ensure that their films get any one of these advantages. For example, consider the recently released Venkatesh starrer Babu Bangaram, which was slammed by critics as a worthless movie.
Surprisingly, Babu Bangaram notched up solid figures in the first week thanks to the long weekend followed by Independence day holiday. Also, Sai Dharam Tej’s Thikka failed badly and further increased the craze for Babu Bangaram. Despite a poor narration, Babu Bangaram managed to garner strong collections and with no other prominent releases, the film has been securing good collections on the weekdays as well. So, releasing the film on August 12th has helped Babu Bangaram big-time. Otherwise the film would have ended with no trace at the box office.
One person who will be telling to himself that he missed out on a big chance is none other than NTR. Initially, NTR’s Janatha Garage was supposed to hit the screens on August 12th. But, unfortunately the film has been postponed to September. The makers have locked August 12th keeping in view the long weekend, but they failed to get the film ready by that time. Imagine Janatha Garage releasing on August 12th – it would have opened very strongly and even if the film managed to get an average talk, it could have easily ended as the biggest grossing film in NTR’s career. Now, Janatha Garage will be looking to cash in on the Vinayaka Chaviti holiday. Anyway, August 12th has no alternative and one can say that both NTR and Janatha Garage have missed an ideal date.
