We always laugh at the undying promise of preparing Maggie noodles in two minutes time. But including preparing Maggie, being late, delaying stuff, we Indians have a very relaxed view of time. But when we are representing our country, we may want to ensure that we do not let this cultural difference have an impact on the image of our nation. The one cultural difference that irritates the Americans most is our behavior around time, appointments and punctuality. Not all Americans are same, but any disruption or deviation even in the small part of the schedule will have an impact way beyond the immediate meeting or deadline.
This year’s Harvard session was a pain for organizers from both Pawan Kalyan and his fans. While we have already learnt about the ruckus created by fans at the Harvard conference, Kalyan also became irritable because he was asked to conclude, as the organizers were running short on time. The inspire session on day one, hosted four guests who had to speak in span of 1hour 20minutes. In this event, accomplished personalities motivate the audience by recounting their successes and failures in personal and professional lives.
The organizers were strict on time and reminded the speakers by raising hand that their time to speak was up. As everyone witnessed, Kalyan was the last speaker and digressed a lot initially. This delayed his overall speech and a point came where organizers asked him to conclude his speech. This did not go well with the actor turned politician. While this is not an open address to public and one should respect the organizers. They have rules and they cannot deviate from them.
However Kalyan was miffed as the organizers asked him to cut short his discourse. As a ripple effect, he avoided the dinner organized for the speakers. Dinners are the networking opportunities and the Jana Sena leader refused to attend it. This dinner was being attend by elites from our country like Omar Abdullah, Sashi Tharoor, Madhavan. Instead only Sharat Maraar attended the dinner. Furthermore, he reportedly informed his team that he will not give the key note speech on the second day. The temper tantrum that the actor was throwing because of this was ridiculous. When you are representing the country, more than your attire, the behavior is what makes you a better person.
The actor who claimed to be shy in his speech at Harvard is known to be a very moody person. Despite his helpful nature, the actor is prone to extreme mood swings and temperamental choices. One should be very careful about time, when one starts to deviate from the course. The actor needs a validation as politician. Just because the actor’s concern is comprehensible, doesn’t mean the behavior is acceptable. Conferences like these always run on clock and he did not plan his speech accordingly. The actor should realize that he can’t digress and complain on the organizers.
