Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu to India on October 7, 2024, marking a significant step in strengthening relations between the two nations. The leaders met at Hyderabad House in New Delhi for important talks that resulted in several key announcements.
During their meeting, Modi and Muizzu virtually inaugurated the Hanimaadhoo International Airport runway in Maldives, showcasing the growing infrastructure cooperation between the countries. They also launched RuPay card payments in Maldives, a move set to boost economic ties and make transactions easier for visitors and businesses alike.
PM Modi emphasized the centuries-old friendship between India and Maldives, calling the island nation “our closest neighbor and dear friend.” He highlighted Maldives’ importance in India’s “Neighborhood First” policy and “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, underlining the strategic significance of their partnership.
The leaders engaged in detailed discussions about defense and security partnerships, recognizing the importance of stability in the Indian Ocean region. “We’re working together for stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region,” Modi stated. He also welcomed Maldives joining the Colombo Security Conclave as a founding member, demonstrating a shared commitment to regional security.
The meeting focused on practical ways to enhance cooperation, including accelerating the Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) Harbor project. This visit marks a new chapter in India-Maldives relations, promising closer ties and mutual benefits for both countries in various sectors.
