Mallika Sukumaran has spoken up for her son Prithviraj amid the ongoing L2 Empuraan film controversy, claiming he’s being unfairly made a scapegoat. The film is undergoing re-censorship with 17 new cuts to remove scenes about the Gujarat riots that some found offensive.
“This is a mother’s pain,” wrote Mallika on Facebook, expressing her distress over criticism against her son. She firmly denied claims that Prithviraj misled superstar Mohanlal or the producers. “Mohanlal is like my younger brother. I’ve known Lal since childhood. It’s very sad that some people are trying to make my son a scapegoat without their knowledge.”
Mallika clarified that everyone involved, including Mohanlal and writer Murali Gopy, was aware of the film’s content throughout production. “They all read the script together. They saw the scenes being shot together, and everyone agreed. If scenes needed editing during shooting, writer Murali Gopy was always willing to do so.”
The controversy stems from the film’s portrayal of the Gujarat riots, particularly scenes showing violence against Muslims. Despite the backlash and Mohanlal’s public apology, L2 Empuraan has performed remarkably well, becoming the fastest Malayalam film to cross ₹100 crore worldwide.
